ROAD TO THE SEA

18" X 24 "
Oil on Panel,  2008 | Larger Image

I had the good fortune to paint this over a period of time, working directly from nature.  The light effect (which is the point of the painting) is never constant; it changes with each passing cloud.  So, a great deal of the working time was spent hoping for clouds to clear, to allow that pure light on the distant mountains.  Some days it never happened. But I experimented with painting ideas, recalling things I had seen years ago, and tried them out here.  For example, it's the first landscape I ever attempted without a green pigment (Viridian) on the palette, mixing all the hues from my other colors.

The best part was that my 11 year old son would sometimes accompany me.  We'd chat about school and girls, and he'd catch up on his reading.  There is one touch, the tiny Makapu'u lighthouse on the furthest ridge, that he painted.  It's  the size of the comma on this sentence (,) and honestly I don't think I could have done a better job. It's just right.
