The neighborhoods of New York City are best understood as small
villages. Within each neighborhood are hierarchies, sometimes going
back a long ways, and one's reputation rises and falls largely
on what is being said about you.
While this picture began as a study of light and color and physical
appearances, the drama of what goes on in people's hearts
gradually became the real subject, and the rest became a theater
set.
