This painting is based on sketches derived from several shops I used to pass in the East and West village sections of Manhattan. I would pass these places and knew that someday I would do something with them, but it took a long time to get there. I wanted the painting to have a sense of time passing by, the sense of being left alone in the moment in a strange and beautiful place.
The homeless fellow in the corner is holding a sketchpad. Consider it a clue to his identity.
