The first thing to keep in mind about a picture like this is that the challenge is never to "freeze" a wave like an ice sculpture, but to paint it as it appears to the eye, as something moving and with powerful forces behind it.
The second thing to keep in mind is that the painting isn't entirely about rocks and waves.
