Sunlight on Sand-Lanikai
Oil on linen
Private collection
This was completely painted outdoors; it had to be. While the
location is a well-known local landmark, my interest was almost
entirely on light and color. This is a beautiful time of day to
work outdoors; the color of the light is full and ripe, and it
permeates surfaces, or so it sometime seems.
This painting is also indebted to the influence of William Lamb
Picknell (1854-1897), an American painter I fortunately discovered
years ago, and who made a surprising impact on me with his beautiful
treatment of paint surfaces and colors.
